Servanthood

Date: 10 August 2008
Speaker: Pastor Kong Hee
Venue: City Harvest Church

Genesis 24:16
Now the young woman was very beautiful to behold, a virgin; no man had known her. And she went down to the well, filled her pitcher, and came up.

7 Servanthood Qualities

1) Servanthood is Willing.

Genesis 24:18-19
So she said, “Drink, my lord.” Then she quickly let her pitcher down to her hand, and gave him a drink. And when she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I will draw water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking.”

"I Will"

Genuine serving is borne out of love for God.

Energy always follow the willing.

Genesis 24:58
Then they called Rebekah and said to her, “Will you go with this man?”
And she said, “I will go.”

Psalm 110:3
Your people shall be volunteers
In the day of Your power;
In the beauties of holiness, from the womb of the morning,
You have the dew of Your youth.

Salvation comes to the willing.

2) Servanthood Excels.

Genesis 24:19
And when she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I will draw water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking.”

I will serve all the way.

Hebrews 12:2
looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Philippians 1:6
being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;

Whenever you do something, do it well.

God does not just give you enough. He blesses you exceedingly and abundantly, twentyfold fiftyfold and a hundredfold.

"Excellence" = to exceed all expectations and to give attention to details that leads to superior performance.

3) Servanthood is Swift.

Genesis 24:18
So she said, “Drink, my lord.” Then she quickly let her pitcher down to her hand, and gave him a drink.

Genesis 24:20
Then she quickly emptied her pitcher into the trough, ran back to the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels.

Time is more valuable than money.

4) Servanthood is Never Convenient.

Luke 17:7-8
And which of you, having a servant plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and sit down to eat’? But will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for my supper, and gird yourself and serve me till I have eaten and drunk, and afterward you will eat and drink’?

Serving God and serving people will never be convenient.

5) Servanthood is Honouring.

Genesis 24:18
So she said, “Drink, my lord.” Then she quickly let her pitcher down to her hand, and gave him a drink.

Honoring is in the way we present ourselves.

Luke 14:8
“When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place, lest one more honorable than you be invited by him;

A man of God is a lover of hospitality. Friendly, happy, generous.

6) Servanthood is Work.

Destiny is not what you know, but how you serve.

Rebekah did not serve for the money, but as she served, financial blessings came into her life.

7) Servanthood is Caring For People.

"Stranger" = People living outside our circle.

Hebrews 13:1-2
Let brotherly love continue. Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels.

Do not let love end.

Serve strangers, for by doing so you may have unknowingly serves the Messenger of God.

Rebekah's character and attitude was pleasing in God's eyes.
